    Summary

    Peripheral serum levels of total estrone were significantly higher in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This finding supports the role of estrogens in the development of BPH.

    Background:

    • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition in aging men.
    • The role of hormones, particularly estrogens, in BPH etiology is debated.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate peripheral serum levels of key hormones in men with BPH compared to healthy controls.
    • To assess the association between hormone levels and BPH.

    Main Methods:

    • Serum levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone, and total estrone were measured.
    • Measurements were taken in 20 BPH patients (59-79 years) and 49 healthy men (58-79 years).

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were observed in FSH, LH, or testosterone levels between the groups.
    • Total estrone levels were significantly higher in the BPH group (p < 0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • Elevated serum total estrone may be associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia.
    • These findings support the hypothesis that estrogens play a role in the etiology of BPH.
