Summary

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in girls shows lower brain glucose metabolism compared to neurotypical girls and ADHD boys. These findings highlight the need for further research into ADHD presentations in females.

Background:

  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder.
  • Gender-based differences in ADHD symptomatology and neurobiology are increasingly recognized.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of ADHD and gender on cerebral glucose metabolism (CMRglu).
  • To utilize positron emission tomography (PET) with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose to assess brain activity.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 19 neurotypical and 20 adolescents with ADHD participated.
  • Cerebral glucose metabolism was measured using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET during an auditory continuous performance task.

Main Results:

  • No significant global or regional CMRglu differences were found between ADHD and neurotypical adolescents overall.
