    Summary

    This study investigated oroantral communications in monkeys, finding significant inflammation in the maxillary sinus lining. Epithelial healing was incomplete within six days, indicating challenges in spontaneous closure.

    Background:

    • Oroantral communications (OACs) can arise after tooth extraction, potentially leading to sinusitis.
    • Management of OACs requires understanding healing dynamics.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To histologically evaluate the healing response of experimental oroantral communications in a primate model.
    • To assess the inflammatory and epithelialization changes within the maxillary sinus following OAC creation.

    Main Methods:

    • Experimental OACs were created in nine macaques (Macaca irus) by extracting maxillary molars.
    • Polyethylene catheters were used to maintain the communications for 1 to 6 days.
    • Histological examination of the maxillary sinus mucosa was performed.

    Main Results:

    • Inflammatory changes were observed in the maxillary sinus mucosa, particularly at the floor and lower walls.
    • Inflammation was most severe at 6 days post-injury.
    • Epithelial proliferation occurred along the catheter by day 3, but continuous epithelial coverage of the OAC was not achieved by day 6.

    Conclusions:

    • Experimental OACs in macaques induce significant maxillary sinus inflammation.
    • Spontaneous epithelial closure of OACs is not consistently achieved within 6 days in this model.
    • Further investigation into promoting OAC closure is warranted.
