Summary

Chronic alcohol use can lead to cognitive impairment, but thiamine deficiency is not the primary cause. Alcohol-related cognitive deterioration is more strongly linked to alcohol intake duration and education levels.

Background:

  • Chronic alcohol consumption is frequently associated with cognitive deficits, often linked to Wernicke-Korsakoff encephalopathy and suspected nutritional deficiencies.
  • Alcoholic Cognitive Deterioration (ACD) is a recognized condition impacting intellectual and memory functions in long-term alcohol users.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between alcoholic cognitive deterioration (ACD) and specific nutritional and vitamin deficiencies in chronic alcoholic patients.
  • To determine if serum thiamine levels are a significant factor in the cognitive impairments observed in ACD.

Main Methods:

  • Cognitive assessments including intelligence and memory tests were administered to 54 chronic alcoholic patients and 30 healthy controls.

    Conclusions:

    • Serum thiamine deficiency does not appear to be the primary cause of cognitive impairment in chronic alcoholic patients.
    • The duration of alcohol consumption and educational background are more significant factors influencing intellectual and memory performance in ACD.
