Summary

This study investigated Q fever (Coxiella burnetii) in Taiwan, finding 48 acute cases among febrile patients. The indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test proved effective for diagnosing this rickettsial disease.

Area of Science:

  • Epidemiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Q fever, a rickettsial disease caused by Coxiella burnetii, is reported sporadically worldwide.
  • Taiwan has had only one documented case of Q fever previously.
  • This study aimed to assess the prevalence and status of Q fever in Taiwan.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the serological status of Q fever in Taiwan.
  • To determine the presence and extent of Coxiella burnetii infections.

Main Methods:

  • Tested 579 paired serum specimens from suspected febrile patients between 1991-1992.
  • Utilized the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) technique for antibody detection.

Main Results:

  • Identified 48 serologically confirmed acute Q fever cases.
  • Cases were concentrated in Tainan, Pingtung, and Kaohsiung.
  • Affected individuals were predominantly males aged 40-50, with peak incidence in June and July.

Conclusions:

  • Antibody titers in positive cases reached 1:320 or higher by day 13 post-onset.
  • The indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test is a valuable diagnostic tool for Q fever.
  • Further investigation into the epidemiology of Q fever in Taiwan is warranted.
