    Summary

Two new hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBs Ag) subtypes, adw q positive and adr q negative, were identified. These discoveries enhance our understanding of HBV epidemiology and geographical distribution.

    Area of Science:

    • Virology
    • Immunology
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen (HBs Ag) exhibits diverse subtypes crucial for epidemiological tracking.
    • Previous classifications recognized 10 HBs Ag subtypes, with established rules for their determination.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To identify and characterize novel HBs Ag subtypes using the q determinant.
    • To investigate the geographical distribution and prevalence of these new subtypes.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized the q determinant for HBs Ag subtyping.
    • Analyzed HBs Ag samples from silent carriers and patients globally, with a focus on Europe and Asia.

    Main Results:

    • Identified two new HBs Ag subtypes: adw q positive and adr q negative.
    • HBs Ag/adw4 q positive cases were found predominantly in Europe (France, Germany), suggesting a localized distribution.
    • HBs Ag/adr q negative cases were primarily detected in Oceania (New Caledonia, French Polynesia), indicating a distinct geographical pattern absent in Asia.

    Conclusions:

    • The newly defined HBs Ag subtypes adw q positive and adr q negative provide valuable markers for advanced epidemiological and geographical studies of Hepatitis B.
    • These findings highlight exceptions to previously accepted HBs Ag subtyping rules, particularly concerning the q determinant's presence in HBs Ag/adw4.
