Background:

  • Two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography utilizes automated border detection (ABD) for on-line measurement of left ventricular cavity area and fractional area change.
  • The clinical utility of this quantitative method requires extensive validation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To validate the accuracy of 2D echocardiographic ABD in measuring left ventricular areas and fractional area change.
  • To compare ABD measurements with manual tracing methods in normal subjects.

Main Methods:

  • Manual and ABD measurements of left ventricular end-diastolic and end-systolic areas were compared in 34 normal subjects.
  • Measurements were performed on mid-left ventricular short axis and apical 4-chamber views.
  • Left ventricular volumes and ejection fraction were manually calculated off-line.

Main Results:

  • ABD provided measurements in 85% (short axis) and 79% (apical 4-chamber) of subjects.
  • ABD measurements of left ventricular areas showed strong correlation with off-line manual measurements (r=0.88-0.97).
  • Short axis ABD fractional area change correlated better with off-line ejection fraction (r=0.72) than the apical 4-chamber view (r=0.45).

Conclusions:

  • Left ventricular areas measured by ABD demonstrate good correlation with manually traced areas and volumes.
  • Short axis ABD fractional area change serves as a reliable substitute for off-line manually traced ejection fraction in normal individuals.
