Summary

Immobilization stress rapidly increases somatostatin (SRIF) release from the median eminence (ME) in rats. However, jugular catheterization blunts this SRIF response, suggesting stress-induced changes in growth hormone (GH) regulation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of immobilization stress on somatostatin (SRIF) release from the median eminence (ME) in rats.
  • To examine how jugular catheterization, a procedure associated with stress, influences SRIF release during immobilization stress.
  • To explore the relationship between SRIF release, GH levels, and stress in rats.

Main Methods:

  • Unanesthetized rats were implanted with push-pull cannulas (PPC) in the ME.
  • ME was perfused with artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) under basal, stress (IMO), and recovery conditions.

    • Immobilization stress acutely enhances somatostatin (SRIF) release from the median eminence (ME) in rats.
    • Jugular catheterization, potentially due to surgical stress, alters the neuroendocrine response to immobilization, blunting the expected SRIF release.
    • Differences induced by jugular catheter surgery may explain the modified regulation of GH control under acute stress.
