Summary

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) causes enteric hepatitis via fecal-oral transmission. This study shows HEV can be detected in serum before symptoms, suggesting possible parenteral spread in endemic regions.

Perspectives in public health·2024

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Virology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a significant cause of acute hepatitis globally.
  • Transmission is primarily faecal-oral, leading to enteric infections.
  • HEV causes sporadic and epidemic non-A, non-B hepatitis.

Observation:

  • A single volunteer study investigated HEV transmission and disease progression.
  • Clinical and biochemical signs of infection were monitored.
  • HEV was detected in stool and serum using reverse transcription/polymerase chain amplification.

Findings:

  • HEV detection in serum preceded the appearance of clinical symptoms.
  • Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against HEV persisted for at least 2 years post-infection.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The study confirmed the correlation between clinical features and HEV detection.
  • Implications:

    • Early HEV detection in serum suggests potential for parenteral transmission routes.
    • Understanding transmission dynamics is crucial for controlling HEV in endemic areas.
    • Persistent IgG antibodies indicate long-term immune response to HEV infection.
