With meticulous antepartum and intrapartum care, including access to appropriate facilities and personnel, many patients with a cardiac disorder may deliver a healthy newborn without significant adverse maternal sequelae. It is also clear, however, that significant maternal morbidity and mortality will continue to occur in some of these patients, despite optimal care. In most cases, such care will be provided by a team including obstetricians, perinatologists, neonatologists, cardiologists, and anesthesiologists to ensure optimal outcome.
