A psychoeducational approach to depression in women
1University of North Carolina at Charlotte, College of Nursing 28223.
Abstract:
Depression is conceptualized as a multidimensional process in women. Women who are depressed must deal with a myriad of problems. A group psychoeducational approach provides a comprehensive treatment strategy to assist women in developing the knowledge and skills necessary for managing the stresses associated with being a women in our society. The small group format also contributes the peer support necessary to learn new skills and improve self-esteem. Psychiatric nurses, with their background in client education and knowledge of groups, are in an ideal position to provide the holistic approach that may prevent episodes of clinical depression or reduce relapses. The proposed framework for intervention can provide women with the skills necessary to manage the life events and role demands that have long been implicated in the development and maintenance of their depressive symptoms.
