Background:

  • Cataract surgery involves replacing the clouded natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
  • Hydrogel IOLs offer potential advantages in biocompatibility and optical quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the single-piece hydrogel Iogel intraocular lens (IOL).
  • To compare outcomes between capsulorhexis and envelope techniques for anterior capsulotomy in IOL implantation.

Main Methods:

  • 130 patients underwent extracapsular cataract extraction with Iogel IOL implantation.
  • Anterior capsulotomy was performed using either capsulorhexis (59 patients) or the envelope technique (71 patients).
  • Follow-up averaged 22 months, assessing visual acuity, complications, and endothelial cell loss.

Main Results:

  • 78.5% of patients achieved an average visual acuity of >8/10.
  • No significant inflammatory or non-inflammatory complications were noted.
  • Lens decentration occurred in 5 cases, linked to asymmetric placement; endothelial cell loss was ~7% in both groups.

Conclusions:

  • The Iogel hydrogel IOL demonstrates safety and efficacy in cataract surgery.
  • Avoiding excessive intraocular manipulation is recommended to prevent postoperative IOL decentration and deformation.
