Ossification of pituitary adenomas is extremely rare. This study details a unique case of ossified somatotropinoma in a patient with acromegaly, showing significant symptom relief after surgical removal.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Pituitary adenomas are common tumors, with calcification noted in up to 25% of degenerated cases.
  • Ossification within pituitary adenomas is exceptionally rare, with only one prior case reported (a prolactinoma).

Observation:

  • A 42-year-old female with acromegaly presented with a 2 cm somatotropinoma.
  • The pituitary adenoma was surgically removed via the transsphenoidal approach.

Findings:

  • Histopathologic examination of the resected adenoma revealed areas of ossification.
  • The patient experienced significant improvement in acromegaly symptoms and normalization of serum growth hormone levels post-surgery.

Implications:

  • This case represents a unique instance of osteoid metaplasia in a somatotropinoma.
