    Area of Science:

    • Nursing Education
    • Higher Education in Nursing
    • Nurse Workforce Development

    Background:

    • Baccalaureate entry into practice requires qualified nurse educators.
    • Previous studies have examined nurse educator preparation in the United States.
    • The need for adequately prepared nurse faculty is critical for the nursing profession.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe the nursing education component within Canadian master's in nursing programs.
    • To assess the adequacy of preparation for the role of nurse teacher provided by these programs.
    • To replicate and update previous research on master's programs in nursing education.

    Main Methods:

    • A descriptive, cross-sectional study design was employed.
    • A questionnaire was mailed to Deans/Directors of all 10 English-language Canadian master's in nursing programs.
    • A 100% return rate was achieved, allowing for comprehensive data collection.

    Main Results:

    • Seven out of ten programs offered specific nursing education coursework.
    • Two programs required education coursework outside the nursing discipline.
    • No fixed requirements were identified for nurse teacher preparation within the surveyed courses.

    Conclusions:

    • Current master's in nursing programs in English Canada may not provide sufficient preparation for the role of nurse teacher.
    • There is a need to evaluate and potentially standardize the nursing education component in graduate nursing programs.
    • Ensuring adequate preparation for nurse educators is essential for maintaining the quality of baccalaureate nursing education.
