Federal inmates. A unique psychiatric nursing challenge

This article explores psychiatric nursing within the context of the federal prison system. An overview of the evolution of federal care for the inmate with mental health problems is presented, along with descriptions of the major issues facing mental health care practitioners caring for this unique population. Current stresses affecting the psychiatric nurse working in the correctional setting are described with emphasis on the phenomenon of institutionalization. The practice of psychiatric nursing in the federal prison system is presented as a stimulating challenge for nurses who can successfully adapt to demands associated with isolation and conflicting role expectations.
