    Background:

    • Cardiovascular and metabolic health are crucial for elderly individuals.
    • Understanding exercise mode effects on energy expenditure and substrate utilization is important for aging populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to walking versus low-sit cycling in healthy elderly men.
    • To determine differences in energy expenditure and fat oxidation between these exercise modes.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten healthy elderly men (mean age 71.4 years) performed 15-minute bouts of walking and low-sit cycling at 70% of peak heart rate.
    • Expired air analysis measured oxygen consumption (VO2), respiratory exchange ratio (RER), O2 pulse, total energy expenditure (TE), and fat oxidation (FO).
    • Ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) for legs and breathing were recorded.

    Main Results:

    • Heart rates were similar between walking and cycling (mean = 108 bpm).
    • No significant differences were observed in VO2, O2 pulse, or TE between the two exercise modes.
    • Fat oxidation (FO) was 42% higher during walking compared to cycling (P < 0.05), and RPE was lower for walking.

    Conclusions:

    • Walking and low-sit cycling elicit similar cardiovascular demands and total energy expenditure in elderly men.
    • Walking results in significantly greater fat oxidation compared to low-sit cycling at matched submaximal intensities.
    • These findings suggest walking may be a more effective mode for enhancing fat utilization in older adults.
