Summary

Cataract surgery in patients with diabetes may worsen diabetic retinopathy in the operated eye, leading to poor visual acuity. This retrospective study found significantly more asymmetric retinopathy in surgically treated eyes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether cataract surgery exacerbates diabetic retinopathy in the operated eye.
  • To compare visual acuity outcomes in diabetic patients undergoing cataract surgery versus controls.

  • Retrospective comparison of 32 diabetic patients who had cataract surgery in one eye with 32 diabetic controls who did not.
  • Assessment of visual acuity and severity of background diabetic retinopathy.
