Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of malaria parasitaemia on Hemoglobin A2 (Hb A2) levels.
  • To compare Packed Cell Volume (PCV) and Hb A2 levels during active malaria infection and after treatment.

Main Methods:

  • Determined Packed Cell Volume (PCV), reticulocyte count, and Hb A2 in 28 malaria patients.
  • Measured parameters during parasitaemia and 14 days post-treatment.
  • Hb A2 quantified using cellulose acetate hemoglobin electrophoresis.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant difference in PCV was observed between parasitaemia and post-treatment phases (p > 0.05).
  • Hb A2 levels showed no significant change during and after malaria treatment (p = 0.05).
  • Correlation between parasite count and Hb A2 was not significant (r = -0.22, p = 0.251).
