A rare case of intrapulmonary ectopic thyroid tissue was found in an 83-year-old woman. This benign developmental anomaly, presenting as a pulmonary tumor, has not been previously documented in medical literature.

Area of Science:

  • Pathology
  • Endocrinology
  • Thoracic Surgery

Background:

  • Ectopic thyroid tissue can occur in various locations, but intrapulmonary presentation is exceptionally rare.
  • Thyroid tissue in the lung is typically associated with developmental anomalies rather than neoplastic processes.

Observation:

  • An 83-year-old female patient presented with a pulmonary tumor requiring surgical resection.
  • Histological examination revealed thyroid follicles within the lung tissue.
  • No malignant cells or teratomatous components were identified in the resected specimen.

Findings:

  • The pulmonary tumor was definitively diagnosed as benign ectopic thyroid tissue.
  • The histological findings suggest a congenital developmental anomaly as the etiology.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This represents the first reported case of intrapulmonary ectopic thyroid tissue in the medical literature.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known spectrum of ectopic thyroid tissue locations.
    • Highlights the importance of considering rare developmental anomalies in the differential diagnosis of pulmonary nodules.
    • Further research may elucidate the embryological mechanisms leading to intrapulmonary thyroid tissue.
