Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Psychology

Background:

  • D. L. Hintzman (1994) presented criticisms of the attention/likelihood theory of recognition memory.
  • The criticisms focused on two main points: an incorrect equation and the potential for an alternative transformation of likelihood ratios.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To address and rebut D. L. Hintzman's specific criticisms of the attention/likelihood theory.
  • To clarify the accuracy of the theory's mathematical formulation and the utility of its likelihood ratios.

Main Methods:

  • Detailed examination of the attention/likelihood theory's equations.
  • Analysis and comparison of likelihood ratio transformations.

Main Results:

  • The criticism regarding the incorrect equation for attention/likelihood theory was rebutted.
  • The proposed alternative transformation for likelihood ratios was shown to be less preferable than the original.

Conclusions:

  • The attention/likelihood theory remains robust against the presented criticisms.
  • The original formulation and likelihood ratios of the theory are defended and validated.
