Blind Procedures

13.7K
Ideally, the people who observe and record the children’s behavior are unaware of who was assigned to the experimental or control group, in order to control for experimenter bias. Experimenter bias refers to the possibility that a researcher’s expectations might skew the results of the study. Remember, conducting an experiment requires a lot of planning, and the people involved in the research project have a vested interest in supporting their hypotheses. If the observers knew which...

Blinding

4.0K
Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

    Summary

Transient vision loss after epileptic seizures is rare in children. This temporary blindness, linked to occipital cortex instability, typically resolves within 24 hours.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Pediatric Neurology
    • Epileptology

    Background:

    • Transient vision loss can occur post-seizure, particularly in children.
    • This phenomenon is associated with the occipital cerebral cortex's electrical instability.
    • Seizure foci often originate in the occipital region in juveniles, migrating temporally with age.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of postictal blindness in pediatric epilepsy patients.

    Main Methods:

    • Case study review of three children experiencing transient blindness after epileptic seizures.

    Main Results:

    • All three pediatric patients experienced temporary blindness following epileptic seizures.
    • Vision loss resolved spontaneously in all cases within 24 hours.

    Conclusions:

    • Postictal blindness in children is a rare but transient neurological event.
    • The condition is likely related to the developing brain's electrical activity, specifically in the occipital cortex.
