Lower gastrointestinal malignancy in Crohn's disease

Patients with Crohn's disease have an increased risk of developing lower gastrointestinal cancers, particularly those with severe anorectal complications. Chronic, complicated anorectal Crohn's disease is a key risk factor for developing anal and rectal cancers.

- Twelve patients with anal or lower rectal carcinoma had a history of severe, longstanding anorectal Crohn's disease.
- Complications included stricture, fistula, proctitis, abscess, and anal skin tags.
Implications:
- The development of malignancy in Crohn's disease patients may be particularly linked to chronic, complicated anorectal disease.
- This highlights the importance of vigilant monitoring for malignancy in such patients.
