Summary

X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLPD) can cause severe complications. This study found retinal necrosis, potentially linked to Epstein-Barr virus, in a patient with XLPD and aplastic anemia.

Background:

  • X-linked lymphoproliferative disease (XLPD) is a rare genetic disorder affecting males.
  • XLPD increases susceptibility to severe Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infections, leading to conditions like aplastic anemia and lymphoma.

Observation:

  • A case study of an 8-year-old boy with XLP presented with bilateral retinal necrosis.
  • The patient ultimately died from aplastic anemia, a known complication of XLP.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination revealed retinal necrosis in both eyes.
  • Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genomic DNA was detected in the affected left eye using polymerase chain reaction (PCR).

Implications:

  • Bilateral retinal necrosis may represent an underrecognized manifestation within the spectrum of XLP.
