Summary

Neuron-specific enolase is not a reliable marker for neural crest-derived cells in the developing chicken eye, despite positive staining in neural tissues. Unexpectedly, it was found in the lens epithelium, suggesting a potential role similar to alpha-enolase.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the utility of NSE as a marker for neural crest-derived cells in the developing chicken eye.
  • To examine the expression pattern of NSE in ocular tissues during embryonic development.

  • Immunohistochemical localization of NSE in chicken embryos at various developmental stages.
  • Utilized two distinct antisera specific for NSE.

  • Positive NSE staining observed in the neural retina nerve fiber layer and optic nerve starting around day 10.
