Summary

Urinary interleukin-1b (IL-1b) can help differentiate bladder conditions. Elevated IL-1b indicates bacterial cystitis or bladder tumors, but not interstitial cystitis, suggesting a non-autoimmune cause.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Immunology
  • Biochemistry

Background:

  • Urinary cytokines are researched as markers for intravesical inflammation.
  • Interleukin-1b (IL-1b) is an early cytokine in immune responses.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a protocol for urinary IL-1b analysis.
  • To establish reference values for urinary IL-1b.
  • To measure urinary IL-1b in various bladder diseases.

Main Methods:

  • Developed a simplified urine preparation protocol.
  • Validated a serum IL-1b ELISA kit for urine analysis.
  • Analyzed 56 urine samples from control and patient groups.

Main Results:

  • Established reference values for urinary IL-1b.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No IL-1b elevation in normal or interstitial cystitis groups.
  • Significant IL-1b elevation in bacterial cystitis (p < 0.001) and bladder tumors (58%, p < 0.001).
  • Conclusions:

    • Urinary IL-1b can distinguish bacterial cystitis from interstitial cystitis.
    • Absence of IL-1b in interstitial cystitis suggests non-autoimmune etiology.
    • This study offers a methodological approach for cytokine subtyping in bladder diseases.
