Background:

Dichoptic masking is a phenomenon where a stimulus presented to one eye is masked by a stimulus of similar form presented to the other eye.
Previous research indicates that increasing masking contrast elevates thresholds for detecting a test bar.
The neural mechanisms underlying dichoptic masking and its potential modulation by stereoscopic processes are not fully understood.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate whether stereo matching can intervene and reduce dichoptic masking.
To determine the conditions under which stereoscopic cues release a target from dichoptic masking.
To explore the relationship between stereo matching and contrast discrimination in the visual system.

Main Methods:

A dichoptic masking paradigm was employed, presenting a bar target to one eye and a masking bar to the other.
Contrast thresholds for the test bar were measured as a function of masking contrast.
An additional bar was introduced to the test eye to assess its effect on masking release, varying disparity and contrast.

Main Results:

Threshold elevation due to dichoptic masking was significantly reduced when an extra bar was presented to the test eye.
Release from masking occurred with a disparity of less than 20 minutes of arc between the masking and extra bars.
The extra bar effectively released the test bar from masking when its contrast exceeded approximately one-fifth of the masking bar's contrast.

Conclusions:

Stereo matching processes can effectively counteract dichoptic masking.
The findings suggest that stereo matching occurs at an earlier neural stage than the site limiting dichoptic contrast discrimination.
A contrast threshold for stereo matching is implied by the relationship between the extra bar's contrast and masking release.
