Area of Science:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Clinical Toxicology
  • Pharmacology

Background:

  • Bupropion is a widely prescribed novel antidepressant with limited data on overdose toxicity.
  • Understanding bupropion overdose is crucial for emergency medical management.

Observation:

  • An 18-year-old healthy female intentionally ingested 9 grams of bupropion.
  • The patient presented with grand mal seizures and sinus tachycardia.

Findings:

  • The patient experienced significant central nervous system and cardiovascular effects.
  • Complete neurological recovery was achieved without long-term sequelae.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for severe toxicity with bupropion overdose.
  • It underscores the need for prompt recognition and management of bupropion toxicity in emergency settings.
