Non-neoplastic inclusions in lymph nodes can mimic breast cancer metastases. Awareness and combined immunohistochemical and morphological assessment are crucial to avoid misdiagnosis of these benign lesions.

Background:

  • Axillary lymph node examination is critical in breast cancer staging.
  • Accurate identification of metastatic disease is essential for treatment planning.

Observation:

  • Non-neoplastic inclusions were identified in axillary lymph nodes from breast cancer patients.
  • These inclusions included nevus cells and heterotopic epithelial elements.

Findings:

  • Three cases showed nevus cells, and two showed heterotopic epithelial elements.
  • One case of each type was initially mistaken for metastatic carcinoma.
  • Nevus cells can mimic lobular carcinoma, and heterotopic epithelium can mimic ductal carcinoma.

Implications:

  • Recognizing these benign mimics is vital to prevent misdiagnosis of breast cancer metastasis.
