Summary

This case report highlights a rare complication of pacemaker insertion: bilateral forearm thrombophlebitis. Prompt treatment with anticoagulants and thrombolytics led to successful venous flow restoration.

Background:

Observation:

  • A 69-year-old Japanese woman presented with bilateral forearm thrombophlebitis post-pacemaker insertion.
  • Clinical signs included fever, painful swelling, and inflammatory markers.
  • Digital subtraction venography confirmed brachiocephalic vein thrombosis.

Findings:

  • Intravenous urokinase and heparin therapy rapidly alleviated acute symptoms.
  • A prolonged treatment course involving warfarin and ticlopidine achieved complete venous flow restoration.
