Summary

Thyroid cancer was found in 10% of autopsied thyroid glands. Papillary thyroid carcinomas were the most common type identified in this study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of thyroid carcinomas in a specific population.
  • To identify the histological subtypes of detected thyroid carcinomas.

  • Autopsy data from 444 thyroid glands collected between 1983 and 1984 were analyzed.
  • Thyroid glands were fixed and serially sectioned for detailed examination.

  • A total of 45 thyroid carcinomas (10%) were identified.
  • Papillary carcinomas were the most frequent subtype (41 cases), followed by follicular (2 cases) and undifferentiated carcinomas (2 cases).
