Background:

  • Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital heart disease characterized by anomalous pulmonary venous return.
  • Horseshoe lung is a rare congenital anomaly where lung tissue is fused at the lower poles.
  • The association between horseshoe lung and scimitar syndrome is not well-documented.

Observation:

  • Six cases of horseshoe lung were identified in 147 patients with scimitar syndrome.
  • These cases were associated with both severe infantile and benign adult forms of scimitar syndrome.
  • Clinical and imaging findings were analyzed for these six cases.

Findings:

  • Horseshoe lung diagnosis can be suspected on chest radiographs and confirmed with thoracic CT scans.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The prognosis of scimitar syndrome appears unaffected by the presence of horseshoe lung.
  • Standard diagnostic imaging modalities are effective for identifying this association.

    • Implications:

    • Early diagnosis of horseshoe lung in scimitar syndrome patients is possible with current imaging techniques.
    • The presence of horseshoe lung does not necessitate a change in the management or prognosis of scimitar syndrome.
    • Further research may elucidate the embryological link between these two rare conditions.
