Area of Science:

  • Minimally invasive surgery
  • Gastrointestinal surgery
  • Hematology

Background:

  • Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) can be associated with gallstones (cholelithiasis).
  • Splenectomy is a treatment option for certain types of AIHA.
  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a standard procedure for gallstones.

Observation:

  • A 32-year-old female patient with AIHA and cholelithiasis underwent elective laparoscopic surgery.
  • The gallbladder and spleen were removed intact via a 7-cm umbilical trocar site extension.
  • The patient recovered well and was discharged in excellent condition.

Findings:

  • Successful execution of a combined laparoscopic cholecystectomy and splenectomy.
  • Demonstration of intact specimen retrieval through a single umbilical port site.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The procedure was well-tolerated by the patient.
  • Implications:

    • Laparoscopic splenectomy offers potential advantages over open surgery for spleen procedures.
    • This technique may be beneficial for patients requiring concurrent gallbladder and spleen removal.
    • Highlights the feasibility and safety of minimally invasive combined abdominal surgeries.
