Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Gallstones (cholelithiasis) can affect pregnant women.
  • Previous studies suggested higher prevalence in certain ethnic groups, but data on Hispanic populations is limited.
  • The need for targeted screening in pregnant Hispanic women remains unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of gallstones in a cohort of pregnant Hispanic patients.
  • To investigate the correlation between gallstone prevalence, age, and country of birth.
  • To assess the necessity of increased ultrasound examinations for cholelithiasis in this demographic.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrasound examinations were conducted on 585 pregnant Hispanic patients.
  • Data on age and country of birth were collected and analyzed.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Prevalence rates were compared with existing literature and stratified by country of birth.
  • Main Results:

    • The overall prevalence of gallstones was 5.3%.
    • No statistically significant difference in prevalence was observed between Mexican-born and non-Mexican-born pregnant Hispanic women (ages 20-49).
    • The observed prevalence was not statistically different from previously published, non-ethnically selected pregnant populations.

    Conclusions:

    • The prevalence of gallstones in pregnant Hispanic women is comparable to the general pregnant population.
    • Current data do not support routine, increased ultrasound screening for gallstones specifically in pregnant Hispanic women.
    • Further research may explore other risk factors beyond country of birth.
