Summary

A new semiquantitative method for evaluating silver-stained nucleolar organiser regions (AgNORs) in breast cancer specimens offers a faster and more objective alternative to manual counting. This AgNORs scoring system shows significant correlation with traditional methods.

Area of Science:

  • Histopathology
  • Biomarker quantification
  • Cancer diagnostics

Context:

  • Silver staining of Nucleolar Organiser Regions (NORs) yields AgNORs, crucial for cell proliferation assessment.
  • Traditional AgNORs counting is subjective and time-consuming.
  • Existing AgNORs evaluation methods lack objectivity and efficiency.

Purpose:

  • To introduce a novel semiquantitative AgNORs scoring system.
  • To establish a reproducible and objective method for AgNORs evaluation.
  • To correlate the new scoring system with traditional manual counting methods.

Summary:

  • A new semiquantitative approach categorizes AgNORs into three patterns (RESTING, ACTIVATED, PROLIFERATING) with assigned numerical values.
  • These values are multiplied by the cell rate, generating a score from 100-300.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This method demonstrated a significant correlation (r=0.8363) with manual AgNORs counts in 150 breast cancer samples.
  • Impact:

    • Provides a potentially cheaper and more useful tool for AgNORs evaluation in pathology.
    • Aims to improve the objectivity and efficiency of cancer diagnostics.
    • Further validation studies are ongoing to confirm its clinical utility.
