Area of Science:

  • Virology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Dermatology

Background:

  • Genital herpes, primarily caused by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), is a prevalent sexually transmitted disease.
  • Following initial infection, HSV-2 establishes latency in sensory nerve ganglia, leading to recurrent episodes in 70-80% of individuals.
  • Recurrent genital herpes significantly impacts patients' quality of life, causing substantial physical and psychosocial morbidity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of acyclovir as a suppressive therapy for managing genital herpes.
  • To assess the potential of long-term acyclovir use in controlling and preventing recurrent HSV-2 infections.

Main Methods:

  • Review of existing studies on the long-term use of acyclovir for genital herpes.
  • Analysis of data regarding the effectiveness of acyclovir in reducing recurrence rates and associated morbidity.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Acyclovir is identified as a primary effective antiviral chemotherapeutic agent for genital herpes.
  • Studies indicate that long-term suppressive therapy with acyclovir offers good prospects for managing the condition.

Conclusions:

  • Long-term acyclovir suppressive therapy presents a viable strategy for the management of genital herpes.
  • This therapeutic approach shows potential for controlling and preventing recurrent episodes of genital herpes, thereby reducing patient morbidity.
