Summary

Functional status assessment in rehabilitation and health status assessment for populations share common interests but lack cross-fertilization. Health-related quality of life offers a framework to enhance rehabilitation perspectives and improve outcome indicators.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Outcomes Measurement

Background:

  • Functional status assessment originated in clinical rehabilitation settings.
  • Health status assessment emerged from health services research for population surveys.
  • Limited cross-fertilization exists between these two related fields.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the origins and current status of health status measurement.
  • To examine shared conceptual and methodological issues between functional and health status assessment.
  • To identify potential benefits of health status measurement for rehabilitation.

Main Methods:

  • Review of the origins and current status of health status measurement instruments.
  • Examination of shared conceptual and methodological issues.
  • Analysis of the applicability of health-related quality of life frameworks.

Main Results:

  • Health status measurement has distinct origins but shares common ground with functional status assessment.
  • Health-related quality of life provides a useful conceptual framework for rehabilitation.
  • Health status measures may be more suitable for quality of care and outcome indicators than clinical management.

Conclusions:

  • Integrating health status assessment principles can broaden the rehabilitation perspective.
  • Health status measures can serve as valuable indicators of care quality and patient outcomes.
  • Further exploration of shared methodologies could enhance both fields.
