Summary

Postoperative nystagmus, an involuntary eye movement, is linked to increased nausea and vomiting after general anesthesia. Early detection of nystagmus can help predict and manage these common post-surgical symptoms.

Area of Science:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Neuroscience
  • Surgical Recovery

Background:

  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) are common complications following general anesthesia.
  • Nystagmus, an abnormal eye movement, can occur during the recovery phase.
  • The relationship between these two phenomena requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the presence of postoperative nystagmus.
  • To determine the association between postoperative nystagmus and the incidence of nausea and vomiting.

Main Methods:

  • An open-label study was conducted at a university hospital.
  • Sixty-six patients undergoing elective ambulatory surgery were assessed.
  • Postoperative nystagmus was evaluated using electronystagmography, and nausea/vomiting were monitored for 24 hours.

Main Results:

  • Nystagmus was observed in 42% of patients, while 36% experienced nausea.
  • Patients with nystagmus had a significantly higher incidence of nausea (60% vs. 18%) and vomiting (83% of nauseated patients).
  • Female patients showed a higher incidence of nausea compared to male patients.

Conclusions:

  • Postoperative nystagmus is a significant predictor of nausea and vomiting in the early recovery period.
  • Identifying nystagmus may aid in anticipating and managing PONV.
  • Further research into the mechanisms linking nystagmus and PONV is warranted.
