Area of Science:

  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Appendectomy is a common surgical procedure for appendicitis.
  • Minimally invasive surgical techniques, such as laparoscopy, are increasingly adopted.
  • Evaluating the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic appendectomy is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report the 4-year experience with laparoscopic appendectomy.
  • To assess the feasibility and outcomes of this minimally invasive approach.
  • To identify factors influencing the success of laparoscopic appendectomy.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 154 patients undergoing laparoscopic appendectomy over 4 years.
  • Data collection included patient demographics, operative details, complications, and hospital stay.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Comparison of outcomes based on appendix location and presence of peritonitis.
  • Main Results:

    • 154 patients (mean age 26.7 years) underwent laparoscopic appendectomy.
    • 144 cases (93.5%) were completed laparoscopically; 10 (6.5%) were converted to laparotomy.
    • No deaths occurred; 5.2% post-operative complications (trocar site infections, pain, fever, hematoma).
    • Mean hospital stay was 4.9 days, shorter for cases without peritonitis (2 days vs. 6 days).

    Conclusions:

    • Laparoscopic appendectomy is a feasible and safe procedure for appendicitis.
    • The technique demonstrates better outcomes in cases with ectopic appendix or peritoneal reaction.
    • Minimally invasive appendectomy offers a viable alternative to open surgery with acceptable complication rates.
