Area of Science:

  • Avian medicine
  • Mycology
  • Veterinary pathology

Background:

  • Chronic respiratory tract disease and poor performance are significant concerns in young ostriches.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment of avian respiratory conditions.

Observation:

  • A 4-month-old blue-neck ostrich presented with coughing and dyspnea.
  • Physical examination revealed respiratory distress.
  • Thoracic radiographs indicated air sacculitis.

Findings:

  • Bronchoscopy identified plaques in the bronchus and lower airways.
  • Microscopic examination and culture of biopsy specimens confirmed Aspergillus spp.
  • Postmortem examination verified Aspergillosis as the cause of disease.

Implications:

  • Bronchoscopy offers a valuable tool for the early diagnosis of Aspergillosis in ostriches.
  • Timely diagnosis through bronchoscopy can lead to improved treatment strategies and prognosis.
  • This case highlights the importance of diagnostic procedures in managing fungal infections in avian species.
