Summary

Master athletes experience exercise-induced hypoxemia, a drop in blood oxygen during exertion. This condition, also seen in young athletes, appears more frequently and at lower exercise intensities in older master athletes.

Background:

  • Elite endurance-trained young athletes can experience exercise-induced hypoxemia (EIH).
  • The occurrence of EIH in highly trained older master athletes (MA) is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether master athletes develop exercise-induced hypoxemia.
  • To compare the incidence and characteristics of EIH in master athletes versus young athletes.

Main Methods:

  • Incremental exercise testing was performed on 10 master athletes, 10 young athletes, and 10 control subjects.
  • Arterial blood gases were analyzed, and lung gas exchange was measured during exercise.

Main Results:

  • All master athletes exhibited EIH, with a significant decrease in arterial PO2 starting at 40% of maximal O2 uptake.
