    Parenteral alimentation (TPA) can lead to rapid copper and zinc deficiencies. Supplementing TPA fluids with these essential trace metals is recommended to prevent adverse health outcomes.

    Background:

    • Parenteral alimentation (TPA) is crucial for patients unable to receive nutrition orally.
    • Trace metals like zinc and copper are vital for numerous physiological processes.
    • Deficiencies in essential nutrients can occur during long-term TPA.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To prospectively investigate plasma concentrations of zinc and copper in patients receiving TPA.
    • To assess the impact of TPA on trace metal status.
    • To determine the necessity of trace metal supplementation in TPA.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study of 13 patients with gastrointestinal diseases undergoing TPA.
    • Measurement of plasma zinc and copper levels over 8 days to 7.5 weeks.
    • Analysis of trace metal content in standard TPA fluids.

    Main Results:

    • Consistent and rapid decline in plasma copper levels observed in all patients.
    • Zinc concentrations decreased in 10 out of 13 patients.
    • Standard TPA fluids contained only 50% of the daily zinc requirement and negligible copper.

    • TPA fluids, when unsupplemented, commonly lead to significant decreases in plasma copper and zinc.
    • Increased utilization or redistribution may influence plasma zinc levels in some patients.
    • Supplementation of TPA with zinc and copper is strongly recommended.
