Alcohol counselling in a general hospital
Abstract:
In June 1992 The Scottish Office granted funding to the Department of Psychological Medicine at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for the establishment of a two-year research study on the detection of 'problem drinkers' in the hospital. The authors were employed to set up a service that has evolved to encompass screening problem drinkers, implementing appropriate interventions and increasing staff awareness. In addition, developing their advisory roles and strengthening links with community-based alcohol agencies have been key elements of the initiative.
