Area of Science:

  • Pathology
  • Immunology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Kikuchi's lymphadenitis (histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis) is a rare, benign condition.
  • It is characterized by lymph node inflammation and necrosis.
  • Accurate diagnosis is essential to exclude other serious conditions.

Observation:

  • Five cases of Kikuchi's lymphadenitis were reported in Qatar.
  • The patients included three females and two males, aged 18-36 years.
  • Cervical lymphadenopathy was present in all cases, with some also showing inguinal and femoral involvement.

Findings:

  • Histopathological examination revealed characteristic features of Kikuchi's lymphadenitis.
  • Differential diagnoses included malignant lymphoma, toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, leprosy, Yersinia, and viral infections.
  • Three patients achieved complete remission within three months, indicating a favorable prognosis.

Implications:

  • This study highlights the clinicopathologic features of Kikuchi's lymphadenitis in a Qatari population.
  • Emphasizes the importance of careful histological evaluation to distinguish it from malignant lymphoma.
  • Contributes to understanding the geographic distribution and clinical presentation of this rare disease.
