Background:
- Hypercalcemia in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) can suppress parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion.
- Previous in vitro studies suggested a progressive escape from this suppression.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate in vivo whether escape from PTH suppression during induced hypercalcemia is a common feature in patients with PHP.

- Intravenous calcium infusions were used to induce sustained hypercalcemia in 19 PHP patients and 24 healthy controls.
- Blood ionized calcium (B-Ca2+) and serum intact PTH (S-PTH(1-84)) levels were monitored over 4 hours.
