Summary

Area of Science:

  • Addiction Medicine
  • Pharmacology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Methadone maintenance is a cornerstone treatment for opioid use disorder.
  • Methadone tapering aims to gradually reduce or eliminate methadone dosage.
  • Predictors of successful methadone tapering remain incompletely understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate indicators of success in a methadone tapering program.
  • To identify patient characteristics associated with successful methadone discontinuation.
  • To compare patients undergoing tapering with the general methadone maintenance population.

Main Methods:

  • Archival data from 36 patients in a methadone tapering program were analyzed.
  • Patient variables were assessed to differentiate successful from unsuccessful taperers.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Demographic and clinical data were compared between tapering and general populations.
  • Main Results:

    • No studied variables differentiated successful from unsuccessful methadone taperers.
    • Patients offered tapering had significantly fewer years of heroin use prior to methadone maintenance.
    • The proportion of Black patients attempting to taper was significantly lower than in the general population.

    Conclusions:

    • Current indicators do not predict success in methadone tapering.
    • Patient selection or access to tapering programs may be influenced by duration of heroin use and race.
    • Further research is needed to understand disparities in methadone tapering participation and outcomes.
