Background:

The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) is a narrative task used in personality description and psychological assessment.
Similar narrative tasks are employed in neuropsychological assessments.
Empirical data on the performance of cognitively impaired individuals on thematic tasks are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the performance of hospitalized patients with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) on the TAT with that of nondemented psychiatric inpatients.
To investigate potential differences in TAT performance between DAT patients and a control group.

Main Methods:

Hospitalized patients diagnosed with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) were compared with a group of nondemented psychiatric inpatients.
Performance on the Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) was assessed using specific dependent measures.

Main Results:

The DAT group performed significantly worse on TAT-dependent measures compared to the nondemented group.
Significant differences were observed between groups in total words, mean words per response, loss of instructional set, and picture description tendencies.

Conclusions:

Findings support the prediction of impaired TAT performance in individuals with dementia of the Alzheimer's type.
The results suggest the TAT may serve as a useful screening device for identifying individuals who may require further neuropsychological evaluation.
