Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Psychometrics
  • Alcohol Research

Background:

  • Assessing lifetime alcohol consumption in elderly populations presents unique challenges.
  • Retrospective self-report measures require rigorous validation for reliability and accuracy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reliability and validity of the Concordia Lifetime Drinking Questionnaire (CLDQ).
  • To determine the CLDQ's suitability for assessing lifetime alcohol use patterns in elderly Canadian men.

Main Methods:

  • The study involved 72 elderly Canadian men and their wives.
  • The Concordia Lifetime Drinking Questionnaire (CLDQ) was administered twice, 33 months apart.
  • Graphical lifetime drinking patterns and salient life events were used to enhance recall.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • The CLDQ demonstrated good reliability for lifetime drinking (r = .78).
  • Test-retest correlations for graphical data ranged from .65 to .87.
  • Wife-reported validity correlations were strong (r = .87 at present, r = .72 at marriage).

Conclusions:

  • The Concordia Lifetime Drinking Questionnaire (CLDQ) is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing lifetime alcohol consumption in the elderly.
  • The CLDQ's innovative methods enhance recall accuracy in older adults.
  • Longitudinal drinking patterns observed were consistent with cross-sectional findings.
