Area of Science:

  • Forensic Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Mental Health Services Research

Background:

  • Legal frameworks in New Jersey equate discharge criteria for insanity acquittees (NGRIs) and civilly committed patients.
  • Clinical observations suggested NGRIs may function better than the general inpatient population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the length of inpatient stay and functional levels of NGRIs against a matched control group.
  • To identify factors influencing functioning, such as age, ethnicity, diagnosis, and substance abuse history.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 62 NGRIs was compared with 62 matched controls.
  • Psychiatrist-rated Clinical Global Impression (CGI) and nursing-rated Specific Level of Functioning (SLOF) scores were collected.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • NGRIs achieved significantly better CGI scores.
  • NGRIs demonstrated higher SLOF scores in personal care skills and social acceptability.
  • The social acceptability subscale indicated significantly less aggressiveness among NGRIs.

Conclusions:

  • Inpatient NGRIs exhibited superior clinical functioning and reduced perceived aggressiveness compared to control inpatients.
  • NGRIs' shorter hospital stays were noted, but preceded by extended secure facility care.
  • Findings are discussed considering high rates of paranoid psychotic disorders and substance abuse within the NGRI group.
