Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Lactation Science

Background:

  • Breast reduction mammaplasty is a common procedure.
  • Concerns exist regarding its impact on subsequent breastfeeding capabilities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess breastfeeding success in women after reduction mammaplasty.
  • To identify surgical techniques that may preserve lactation potential.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 30 women who underwent breast reduction and desired to breastfeed.
  • Lactation assessment by a trained consultant.

Main Results:

  • Breastfeeding was possible for 18 out of 19 women who had a physiological breast reduction.
  • Complementary feeding was sometimes necessary.

Conclusions:

  • Physiological breast reduction techniques appear to preserve breastfeeding ability.
  • Maintaining attached functioning breast tissue to the nipple is crucial for lactation post-mammaplasty.
