    Background:

    • Accurate pulp capping is crucial for preserving tooth vitality after mechanical exposure.
    • Evaluating the long-term efficacy of various pulp capping agents is essential for clinical decision-making.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the effectiveness of Dycal (calcium hydroxide), Durelon (polycarboxylate cement), and Keflin (antibiotic) as direct pulp-capping agents in non-human primates.
    • To assess the histological response and reparative dentinogenesis following pulp capping with these materials over extended periods.

    Main Methods:

    • Mechanical pulp exposures were created in 40 permanent monkey teeth and contaminated.
    • Teeth were capped with Keflin, Durelon, or Dycal, followed by varnish and amalgam restoration.
    • Histological analysis of serial sections was performed after 23 and 29 months, including staining for bacteria and vital dye labeling.

    Main Results:

    • Dycal and Durelon showed successful outcomes at both time intervals; Dycal exhibited complete dentin bridging and no inflammation.
    • Keflin demonstrated a low success rate (4 out of 13 teeth).
    • Durelon showed incomplete bridging in some cases and lacked an apparent antibacterial effect or significant reparative dentinogenesis stimulation.

    Conclusions:

    • Dycal is a highly effective pulp-capping agent, promoting excellent healing and dentin bridge formation.
    • Durelon is not recommended for pulp capping due to insufficient evidence of antibacterial properties and reparative dentinogenesis.
    • Keflin, in the tested formulation and application, is unsuitable for direct pulp capping.
